Electronic identification sparks privacy debate

Climbing into his Volvo, outfitted with a Matrics antenna and a Motorola reader he'd bought on eBay for $190, Chris Paget cruised the streets of San Francisco with one objective: To read the identity cards of strangers, wirelessly, without ever leaving his car.

It took him 20 minutes to strike hacker's gold.

Zipping past Fisherman's Wharf, his scanner detected, then downloaded to his laptop, the unique serial numbers of two pedestrians' electronic U.S. passport cards embedded with radio frequency identification, or RFID, tags.

Within an hour, he'd “skimmed” the identifiers of four more of the new, microchipped PASS cards from a distance of 20 feet. (Click here for the rest of the article)

We say: Our FIPS-201 approved SkimSafe badge holders prevent unauthorized badge reading, or skimming. It's not hype. Who has your smart card been talking to?

Glitter Lanyards

Did you go to SHRM 2009 in New Orleans? If so, you probably got one of the new glitter lanyards from the Laminex booth. Tim and Jeff were mobbed for requests suring the show this year, and the glitter "Bling Bling" lanyard was probably number one on the list. Everyone had to have one! Melissa and Jason from BOA do a little modeling below:

Want to order some for your company? Contact CredentialExpress at (800) 228-6522 Ext 121.

Retail price for an order of 500 is approximately $2.16 each (P) for a non breakaway lanyard with the glitter treatment. You'll stand out from the crowd if you wear one of these, unless of course you were wearing it at SHRM 2009. Bling Bling indeed!

Real ID Headed for the Can?

According to CNN.com's story on the topic, Homeland Security chief Janet Napolitano is currently pursuing a way to "repeal Real ID." Although the plan to improve and standardize the current plethora of State issued ID cards available to citizens and nonresidents is currently slated to go into effect in May 2011, it may be in danger of being scrapped.

We in the industry feel that this is a step backward because of the inherent benefits the Real ID Act would afford any ID card issuing entity. Enhancements in the ID card's security would prevent or at least make it harder for would-be counterfeiters to forge documents.

Groups and individuals who oppose Real ID cite privacy concerns as the main reason it should not reach implementation.

We say: Why not step into the future of ID (or the European present) and add contactless chip technology? If you have privacy concerns regarding the transmission of the data on the card, there are many ways to protect it. Using a SkimSAFE is one of those protection methods.

Take responsibility for your own privacy and stop depending on governmental action and programs to do it for you. The risk of minor data loss is far less concerning than is a whole new generation of non-enhanced ID cards without interoperability or anti-counterfeit upgrades.
